How Do I Know If My Car Has A Recall?

Check the registration here, confirm the VIN with the manufacturer, and watch your post: recall letters go to the address on your V5C logbook.

  1. Enter Your Registration

We read the plate’s age in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.

  2. See The Recalls That Match

Choose the make and model to see every DVSA recall for its build dates, most serious first.

  3. Confirm By VIN And Book

Call the maker or a franchised dealer with your VIN. The repair is normally free.

A letter is the strongest evidence of all. If you have one, book the repair even if a check shows nothing yet. What a recall letter means

What Your Recall Check Result Means

Every recall carries one of four labels, taken from what the recall notice says. “No recall found” is never an all-clear: some recalls cover only certain cars, and new ones arrive every week.

LabelWhat it meansWhat to do
Stop drivingThe notice tells owners not to drive.Leave the car parked and call the manufacturer today.
UrgentFire risk, airbags, brakes, steering, seat belts or loss of power.Book the repair this week.
Book soonLighting, latches, visibility or the eCall system.Book at your next convenient date.
LowLabels, handbooks or software with no direct safety effect.Book at your next dealer visit.
No recall foundNothing matched in the data we checked.Check again before you buy or sell, or in six months.

If you notice smoke, a fuel smell or a red warning light, stop when you safely can and get help, whatever the label says. Can I drive with a recall?

Common Recall Questions

Short answers first. Each guide explains the rules, with sources.

Checking A Used Car Before You Buy

DVSA says dealers, including online sellers, must fix safety recalls free of charge before selling a car to a consumer. Private sellers aren’t bound by the same rule.

When Which? looked at dealer-listed Citroën C3s on a major sales site, 12 of 16 had an outstanding recall. Before you hand over money:

  1. Check the registration here, with the car in front of you.
  2. Ask for written proof that each recall was done.
  3. Buying from a dealer? Ask them to fix any open recall before you collect.
  4. Private sale? Call the maker with the VIN before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is This The Same As The DVLA Or DVSA Recall Check?

We use DVSA’s published recall data, updated daily. DVLA holds the keeper details that manufacturers use to send recall letters, but it doesn’t run a recall checker.

Does A Recall Fail The MOT?

No. Since July 2023, outstanding recalls appear on the MOT record for manufacturers that share data, for information only. Recalls and the MOT

I Got A Letter But The Check Shows Nothing. Why?

The letter is the stronger evidence, so book the repair. Some recalls cover only certain cars, and records can lag behind letters. What a recall letter means

Can I Check A Van, Motorhome Or Caravan?

Vans and motorhomes with a registration can be checked here. Caravans have no registration, so they’re checked with the manufacturer using the 17-character CRiS VIN. Motorhome and caravan recalls

Is A Recall Check, And The Repair, Free?

Yes. The check is free, and GOV.UK says you won’t usually have to pay for any repairs or parts under a safety recall. Are car recalls free?

Is My Registration Stored?

No. On this site your plate is read in your browser to work out its age. It isn’t sent to our server, logged or added to any web address.
